The Barcelona Tourism Observatory presents the first monthly report on the Profile and Habits of Tourists in Barcelona Destination.
The profile of the tourist who has visited Destination Barcelona has been affected by the mobility restrictions, which have limited the movements of the population inside the region of residence during most of March. However, during Easter, bubble groups were allowed to travel inside the whole of Catalonia. In this first monthly edition of the report, domestic tourism and traveling for leisure reasons have been the most observed.
As shown on the Perspectives of the tourist activity in the Destination Barcelona report, the reduction in the air capacity during this month (YoY 21/19) has caused the airplane to drop to the third position as the main means of transport to get to the destination. Thus, the own vehicle has been the most popular.
The typical tourist profile has been a 37.2-year-old person, who lives in Catalonia (35.6%), who has traveled as a couple (45.5%), and who has visited the destination municipality 17.8 times on average. The most used method to buy both transport and the accommodation has been directly with the transport company or the establishment (63.4%) and the average stay has stood at 4.3 days. During this stay, tasting gastronomy (79.2%) and taking quiet and relaxing walks (78.3%) have been the most popular activities.
As for the tourist expense, compared to the 2020 average, it has increased by +21.3%. More than half of this has been spent on food and drinks, and the rest, in this order, on shopping, culture and internal transport.
Finally, the average global valuation of the municipalities has stood at 8.57 out of 10 and the most valued aspects have been the character and kindness of the people (8.45) and the accommodation (8.43).
