The OTB presents the monographic report on the Profile and Habits of Tourists in Destination Barcelona 2023 on gastronomic tourism
The Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona: city and region presents the monographic report on gastronomic tourism, which includes the main conclusions of this profile of tourists in the three usual geographical areas that the OTB covers: Barcelona city, Barcelona region and Destination Barcelona.
Gastronomic tourism is a typology of tourism that defines those people who have experienced an experience with food, products and related activities during their stay in the municipality of overnight stay, either by attending a restaurant or by visiting markets, shops selling local food products, visiting local residents' homes, participating in local festivals, etc.
Within gastronomic tourism in Destination Barcelona, we have therefore analyzed the different places where tourists have carried out this activity, obtaining a total of eight types of places frequented by tourists: Spanish cuisine restaurants (52.7%), Catalan cuisine restaurants (42.9%), bars or coffee shops (39.3%), supermarkets or markets (29.6%), international cuisine restaurants (24.1%), fast food (21.6%), signature cuisine (10.4%) and michelin star restaurants (2.6%). It should be noted that in the Barcelona region we do not have statistically significant representation of restaurants with michelin stars, but we do have a new gastronomic typology, those of the accommodation restaurant (3.6% in the region).
If we analyze the top 3 gastronomic tourists, we can see that the profile of the tourist who visits a Spanish cuisine restaurant is formed mainly by international tourists, especially American, German and British tourists, and those who have stayed in a holiday apartment, those who visits a Catalan cuisine restaurant by American and Italian tourists, by those who have stayed in holiday apartment and by those aged 55 and over, and those who visits a bar or coffee shops by tourists who have stayed in a holiday apartment, in a private home (with friends, relatives) and in a motorhome.
Finally, in this monograph, we have carried out an analysis of the interactions of these pairs of gastronomic tourists, detecting some very interesting interactions between them, such as the fact that a significant number of tourists of Destination Barcelona, more than 20%, during their stay in the municipality of overnight stay have attended both Spanish and Catalan cuisine restaurant/s, Spanish cuisine restaurant/s and bar/s or coffee shops and in bar/s or coffee shops and supermarket/s or markets.
