The Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona analyzes the national market in Barcelona region
- The typical profile of the Spanish tourist in Barcelona region is a 44.3-year-old person, with university studies, who travels as a couple for leisure reasons and arrives by private vehicle.
- Transport and accommodation are mostly booked directly through the companies.
- The most valued aspects by the Spanish tourist are the character and kindness of the local people, the natural environment, the accommodation and the safety in the municipalities.
- Food and drink is the item where more resources are spent during the stay.
A few weeks ago, the Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona released the Domestic market in Barcelona report, where all the contextual variables were defined and also the profile and habits of this kind of tourist in Barcelona city were specified.
Now, the OTB complements it with a report that focuses on the typical profile of the Spanish tourist in Barcelona region: a 44.3-year-old person, with university studies (47.1%), who works as a salaried employee (67.8%), travels as a couple (51.5%) or with other family members (27.6%) for leisure reasons (57.7%) and arrives in by private vehicle (68.2%). Thus, in Barcelona region, the Spanish tourists travel more as a family and by private vehicle than those visiting Barcelona city.
When planning the trip, domestic tourists behave in the same way as those who visit Barcelona city: they use the information provided from both, websites and friends and relatives. They also tend to hire the transport to get to the destination through the company's website and they book their accommodation through OTAs (online travel agencies), being Booking most used-one.
As for the type of accommodation they choose, 58.0% of national tourists stay in hotels, followed by those who stay in campsites (22.5%). Their average stay stands at 4.1 nights, slightly above the average registered by domestic tourism throughout the Spanish territory in 2019, 3.7 nights.
The Spanish tourists in Barcelona region are attracted by the character and kindness of the local people and the natural environment of Barcelona region. They also give high ratings to the accommodation and the safety in the municipalities.
Finally, the national market allocates more than half of its spending during the stay on food and drinks, and the rest is distributed, in this order, on shopping, internal transport and entertainment. Thus, the expense per person and night is €33.55, which is below the average of all tourists in Barcelona region (€44.1).
