Daily expenditure during the stay remained above €100 per person per day in Barcelona city in June

The latest tourism activity data in Destination Barcelona have been updated - June 2024 edition

The Barcelona Tourism Observatory: city and region, presents the monthly analysis of the main tourism activity monitoring indicators.

The main conclusions of the June update are presented below by geographical area:

 

Barcelona city

  • Hotels and guesthouses supply accounted for 675 establishments and almost 87,000 available beds. This means almost the same number of beds compared to the previous month, but over the same month last year (+1.4% Var. 24/23).
  • Although that the number of tourists and overnight stays in hotels and guesthouses decreased month-on-month, they increased in homes for tourist use (HTUs). This made the sum of overnight stays in these two types of accommodation to grow +2.4% year-on-year
  • In June, HTUs recorded a shorter length of stay than in the previous month (from 4.0 nights to 3.6), while in hotels and guesthouses, the length of stay remained at 2.6 nights. However, the average length of stay in these types of accommodation increased slightly compared to June 2023, from 2.9 to 3.0 nights.
  • The occupancy rate in hotel establishments near 75% (-0.8pp month-on-month), while in HTUs, 58% (+3.3pp month-on-month).
  • At Barcelona Airport, more than 5 million movements of passengers were recorded (+1.3% month-on-month), well ahead of the same period of 2023 (+12.9% Var. 24/23 in passengers). The ranking of countries from which passengers flew to Barcelona Airport during this month was leaded by domestic flight passengers. Passengers flying from Italy ranked second, followed by passengers travelling from the United Kingdom, Germany, and France.
  • In Port of Barcelona, 427,000 cruise passengers were registered, falling month-on-month, due to a reduction in the cruise ship supply, yet +11.9% over June 2023. On the other hand, ferry passenger movements, about 180,000, grew not only month-on-month (+52.6%), but year-on-year (+5.5%).
  • The ICUB's cultural facilities received 233,000 visitors, decreasing by -20.0% on the previous month. Despite this, they grew by +2.1% year-on-year and the share of international visitors (73.9%) also gained weight (+3.2%).
  • 84.8% of tourists in hotel establishments were international. The most frequent were Americans (19.5% share) outnumbering domestic visitors (15.2%). They were followed by the British (8.7%) and the French (5.8%).
  • The typical tourist in the city of Barcelona1 was a 36-year-old person, traveling for leisure (73.4%) and as a couple (32.9%). Their average expense kept over 100€ per person per day, +14.8% year-on-year. Most of this expenditure was invested in food and drinks (45.1%), followed by entertainment, leisure, and culture (20.5%) and shopping for clothes, footwear, souvenirs, and other items (19.9%).
  • As for the job market, in tourism activity, temporary hiring grew compared to May (+2.8%) and the indefinite was reduced (-6.2%). However, permanent hiring remained higher than the temporary and the registered unemployment decreased by -2.5% month-on-month.

Barcelona region

  • The open accommodation supply in the region was +5.0% higher than in June 2023, with a total of 1,132 establishments and almost 96,000 operating bedplaces.
  • Both the number of tourists and overnight stays in May 2024 increased month-on-month. In addition, the number of stays in hotel establishments, campsites and rural tourism grew by +12.9% year-on-year
  • The average length of stay was around 3.1 nights, which means an increase compared to June 2023 (+0.3 nights). Campsites continued to have the longest length of stay of all the types of accommodation analysed (4.0 nights). They were followed by hotel establishments (3.0 nights) and rural tourism (2.2 nights).
  • 6 out of every 10 tourists in hotel establishments in Barcelona region were international (-4.4pp month-on-month).
  • The typical tourist in Barcelona region during this month1 was a person aged 44, travelling for leisure (64.1%) and as a couple (36.5%). The average expenditure during the stay, 45.3€ per person per daygrew year-on-year (+2.0%). This expenditure was mainly spent on food and drinks (57.8%), followed by leisure, culture, and entertainment (15.6%).
  • Both permanent and temporary hiring in tourism activity in Barcelona region grew month-on-month, but at different rates (+1.4% and +12.6%, respectively). Permanent contracts also remained higher than temporary ones, and registered unemployment decreased by -1.6% month-on-month.
