Spain, the United States, and France, the main source markets during spring for Destination Barcelona

The 2025 second quarter edition of the Outbound markets in Destination report has been released
The Barcelona Tourism Observatory: city and region publishes its Outbound Markets Report for the second quarter of 2025. This report includes an overview of air connectivity, holidays, online interest and positioning, as well as the status and characteristics of hotel bookings from the main source markets of Destination Barcelona: Germany, Spain, the United States, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
Here are the main points to highlight from this edition of the report:
- The domestic market has the highest number of hotel bookings for the next quarter, both in Barcelona city (29.6% share) and in Barcelona region (55.5% share). The United States remains the international market with the most bookings for Barcelona city (with a 16.7% share), while France leads in Barcelona region (with a 10.5% share).
- All the markets analyzed will have school holidays during Easter. Most of them will also have several public holidays spread across May and June, which could turn into long weekends.
- Destination Barcelona has improved or maintained its positioning in the main source markets, both in online searches for accommodation and flights. As a result, it remains within the Top 10 international destinations.
- Sagrada Familia continues to top the list of the most frequent online search terms related to Barcelona city from the main source markets.
- The celebration of Easter in April has led to hotel bookings for stays during this month to show, in general, a higher level of bookings than a year ago in both Barcelona city and Barcelona region. As for May and June, Barcelona region has more bookings than the previous year, but in the case of Barcelona city, these bookings are lower.
- Some booking peaks coincide with bank holidays or holiday periods in the analyzed countries, while others are linked to events in Destination Barcelona, such as fairs, festivals, and sports events.
Below are the main conclusions of the report by source market:
Germany
- The German cities with the highest number of air passengers from/to Barcelona Airport keep being Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich.
- During the second quarter of 2025, there will be school holidays from 05/04 until Easter. There will also be several public holidays that could turn into long weekends.
- The region showing the greatest interest in Barcelona city over the last 90 days was Berlin. The most searched terms have been the "weather" and "Sagrada Familia".
- The Destination ranked 10th in internet searches for accommodation and 6th for flights in the ranking of international destinations. This positioning has improved year-on-year.
- Hotel bookings for the second quarter of 2025 from Germany are higher than the same period in 2024 for Barcelona region, yet lower for Barcelona city. Several peaks in bookings in Easter and throughout May and June.
- Germans have booked, for these dates, an average of more than 4 months in advance. Stays will be around 3.6 nights in Barcelona city and 4.0, in Barcelona region. Travelling as a couple will be the most frequent in Barcelona city, and as a solo, in the region.
- The level of hotel bookings in both Barcelona city and Barcelona region is slightly below the average of bookings for other international European destinations (excluding Berlin).
Spain
- The Spanish cities with the highest number of air passengers from/to Barcelona Airport are Palma de Mallorca, Madrid, and Sevilla.
- During the second quarter of 2025, the school holidays will take place during Easter and from 21/06. There will also be several public holidays in May across Spain that could turn into long weekends.
- The region that has shown the greatest interest in Barcelona city over the last 90 days has been Catalonia. The most searched terms have been "Sagrada Familia", "Andorra" and the "Cathedral".
- During the same period of analysis, the Destination has achieved the 2nd position in internet searches for both accommodation and flights, within the ranking of national and international destinations.
- Hotel bookings for the first quarter of 2025 from Spain are also ahead of last year's same period in Barcelona region, but behind in Barcelona city. It must be highlighted that Spain stands as the first source market in volume for stays in the next few months Destination Barcelona (29.6% of bookings in Barcelona city and 55.5% in Barcelona región).
- Spaniards have booked, for these dates, an average of more than 4 months in advance and stays will be around 2.5 nights long in Barcelona city, and 2.2 in the region. Travelling as a couple will remain as the most frequent way of travelling.
- Hotel bookings for Barcelona region are at a higher level than the average of the other analyzed destinations, but for Barcelona city, they are at a lower level. Bookings for both geographical areas are significantly below those of Madrid.
United States
- The U.S. cities with the highest number of passengers with flight connections to Barcelona Airport are New York, Miami, Philadelphia, and Atlanta.
- During the second quarter of 2025, school holidays will be during Easter and starting from 27/06.
- The region that has shown the highest interest in Barcelona city during the last 90 days has been the District of Columbia. The most searched term has been the "Sagrada Familia".
- The Destination has ranked 10th in online accommodation searches and 19th in flight searches within the international destination rankings (it’s important to note that many Americans arrive in Destination Barcelona from other European cities). Both positions have improved year-on-year.
- Hotel bookings for the second quarter of 2025 from the United States are slightly below the same period last year in Barcelona city, but slightly ahead in Barcelona region. It should be noted that this is the international market with the most bookings for the upcoming quarter for Barcelona city (with a 16.7%-share). The arrival of Americans will be quite uniform in the city throughout the entire quarter, while in Barcelona region, booking peaks are observed in mid-May and June.
- Americans have booked with an average lead time of over 4 months for these dates. Stays will be 3.3 nights in Barcelona city and 5.7 in Barcelona region. Couple trips will be the most frequent.
- Hotel bookings for Barcelona city are above the average of bookings for other international European destinations, while for Barcelona region, they remain significantly lower.
France
- The French cities with the highest number of air passengers from/to Barcelona Airport keep being Paris, Nice, and Nantes.
- During the second quarter of 2025, school holidays will be in April and beginning of May, by fortnights, in the different French regions. There will also be several public holidays during the months of May and June that could turn into long weekends.
- The region showing the greatest interest in Barcelona city over the last 90 days was Languedoc-Roussillon. The most searched terms were "Sagrada Familia" and "parks".
- During the same period of analysis, the destination has achieved the 2nd position in internet searches for accommodation and ranked 6th for flights in the ranking of international destinations. This positioning has improved slightly compared to a year ago.
- Hotel bookings for the second quarter of 2025 from France are slightly lower than the same period in 2024. However, it is worth noting that this is the international market with the most bookings for the upcoming months at the moment for Barcelona region (10.5% of the total), where a booking peak is observed during the second week of May.
- The French have booked for these dates close to 110 days in advance. Stays will be around 3.4 nights and travelling as a couple will be the most frequent.
- The level of hotel bookings for Barcelona city is over the average of bookings for other international European destinations (excluding Paris), while those for Barcelona region are higher.
Italy
- The Italian cities with the highest number of air passengers from/to Barcelona Airport keep being Milan, Rome and Venice.
- During the second quarter of 2025, school holidays will be in Easter, from 01/05 to 04/05, and from 07/06. There will also be some public holidays that could turn into long weekends, on 25/04 and 02/06.
- The region showing the greatest interest in Barcelona city over the last 90 days was Umbria. The most searched term has been "Sagrada Familia", followed by the "sea" and the "beach".
- During the same period of analysis, the destination ranked 3rd in internet searches for both accommodation and flights in the ranking of international destinations, maintaining its positioning year-on-year in each of the categories analysed.
- Hotel bookings for the first quarter of 2025 from Italy are slightly lower than the same period in 2024 for Barcelona city, but slightly higher for Barcelona region. In both geographical areas, booking peaks are observed for Easter and the first week of June.
- Italians have booked, for these dates, between 3 and 4 months in advance. Stays will be 3.1 nights long in Barcelona city, and 3.6 in the region. Couples will be the most frequent travellers in both Barcelona city and Barcelona region.
- The level of hotel bookings for Barcelona city is in line with the average of bookings for other international European destinations (excluding Rome), while those for Barcelona region are slightly lower.
The Netherlands
- The Dutch cities with the highest number of air passengers from/to Barcelona Airport keep being Amsterdam, Eindhoven, and Rotterdam.
- During the secondquarter of 2025, there will be school holidays during the last week of Apri / first week of May in different Dutch regions. There will also be several public holidays spread throughout the three months.
- The region showing the most interest in Barcelona city over the last 90 days was North Holland. The most searched terms were the weather, "Sagrada Familia", and "Park Güell".
- The destination has ranked 9th in internet searches for accommodation in the ranking of international destinations, while for flights, ithe 3rd. This positioning has improved slightly compared to a year ago.
- Hotel bookings for the second quarter of 2025 from the Netherlands are slightly higher than last year's, in both Barcelona city and Barcelona region. However, the most notable peak is in the region, during the second week of May.
- The Dutch have booked, for these dates, an average of near 4 months in advance. Stays will be 3.3 nights-long in Barcelona city, and 3.5 in the region. Travelling as a couple will be the most frequent in the first area, while travelling as a couple and as a solo, in the second.
- Hotel bookings for Barcelona city are in line with the average of bookings for other international European destinations (excluding Amsterdam), while those for Barcelona region are above.
United Kingdom
- The British cities with the highest number of air passengers from/to Barcelona Airport are London, Manchester, and Bristol.
- During the second quarter of 2025, school holidays will be during some weeks of April, in different regions. There will be also regional school holidays at the end of May and starting from 27/06.
- The region showing the most interest in Barcelona city over the last 90 days has been England. The most searched terms have been the weather, "Sagrada Familia" and the "Cathedral".
- During the same period of analysis, the destination has ranked 7th in internet searches for accommodation and it the 8th for flights in the ranking of international destinations, so it has remained quite stable compared to a year ago.
- Hotel bookings for the second quarter of 2025 from the United Kingdom are, in general, lower than last year. Different booking peaks are observed during these months: in Barcelona city, the first week of June, and in Barcelona region, in mid-May.
- The British have booked more than 4 months in advance for these dates. Stays will be over 3.5 nights, and couple trips will be the most frequent.
- Hotel bookings for both Barcelona city and Barcelona region are in line with the average of bookings for other international European destinations (excluding London).
