Indefinite hiring in tourism activity outnumbers the temporary once again in Destination Barcelona

In November 2022, tourism activity in Destination decreased due to the inherent seasonality of tourism and, although some indicators were still lower than in the same month of 2019, some others recovered and even surpassed the same levels reached before the pandemic.

Below are the key indicators for November:

• The bed supply in tourist accommodation in Destination Barcelona was very similar to 2019 levels. Despite the closure of establishments in November, more than 157,000 available beds were registered in the Destination, which meant only -0.5% below the same period in 2019.
• The number of tourists was reduced due to the seasonal nature of tourism activity compared to the previous month in the Destination as a whole, but an increase in the average stay over the same period in 2019 meant that the number of overnight stays was only -1.2% lower than in November 2019.
• Although the month-on-month loss of tourists and overnight stays was higher in Barcelona region than in Barcelona city, the number of overnight stays in the region was higher than in the same period of 2019 (+0.5%), while in Barcelona city, it was lower than in the pre-pandemic period (-5.5%).
• By type of establishment, hotel establishments in Barcelona city experienced a decrease in overnight stays of -2.8% compared to 2019, while homes for tourist use experienced a decrease of -10.0%. As for the hotel establishments in Barcelona region, the number of overnight stays was above pre-pandemic levels (+4.4%), which contrasts with the demand figures for campsites (-14.6% Var. 22/19) and rural tourism (-22.2%).
• At Barcelona Airport, tourism seasonality led to a 22.7%-reduction month-on-month. However, the aerodrome registered more than 3.2 million passengers, which means that its recovery kept stable at around 90% of the levels reached in the same period of 2019.
• As for Barcelona Port, ferry passengers decreased again, also because of seasonality, but kept higher than the same period in 2019 (+8.2%). As for cruise ship passengers, the decrease in the supply of this type of transport in November caused them to be -30.2% below pre-pandemic levels.
• The proportion of foreigners at the ICUB cultural facilities in Barcelona city was close to 6 out of 10 visitors, losing prominence compared to the previous month.
• International tourism also lost weight in hotel establishments, although it surpassed once again the domestic tourism, in both Destination Barcelona (67.8%) and Barcelona city (75.5%). In the latter, Americans (9.5%) were the internationals with the highest number of arrivals, followed by the French (8.1%) and the British (6.8%).
• At Barcelona Airport, the passengers on domestic flights (29.1%) kept the first position. Despite being far from the domestic flight passengers, those travelling from Italy (9.6%) achieved the second position, followed by those from the UK (8.2%), and Germany (7.8%).
• The average expenditure in Destination Barcelona during the stay was €76.6, €11.4 over the previous month, but -2.9% behind the same period in 2019. By geographical area, in Barcelona region a slight decline was registered month on month (-3.1%), while the expense in Barcelona city grew in both cases, monthly (+22.5%) and on 2019 (+7.5%). The item to which the most money was allocated was food and beverage, followed by shopping for clothes, footwear, souvenirs, and personal effects, which climbed from the third to the second position compared to the previous month.
• In the job market, registered unemployment in tourism activity remained below pre-pandemic levels (-23.3%), and indefinite contracts (51.2%) outnumbered the temporary once again in Destination Barcelona as a whole.
