The Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona: city and region has published its report on the results of the Survey on the profile and habits of tourists visiting Destination Barcelona during 2025

The typical tourist profile who has visited Destination Barcelona in 2025 is that of a man (62.6%), with an average age of 39.2 years, of international origin (74.5%), with university studies (66.9%) and working as a salaried employee (62.8%).

The hotel continues to be, once again, the type of accommodation most used by 53.5% of tourists in Destination Barcelona, followed by private homes (with friends, relatives) (14.6%) and Homes for Tourist Use (HTUs) (13.8%). The average stay at Destination Barcelona in 2025 is 4.7 nights.

The plane has been once again become the main means of arrival (66.2%), followed by private vehicles (17.0%) and the train (10.4%). Travel planning is mainly by the information they find on websites (55.6%), with Booking and artificial intelligence standing out as the most used sources, and by their friends or relatives (25.1%). Transport is mostly hired through the company’s website (70.5%), while accommodation is mainly hired through OTAs (online travel agencies) (51.9%), with Booking and Airbnb being the most used.

Leisure is the main reason for travel (64.4%), followed by those who come for professional reasons (20.3%) and for personal or other reasons (15.3%). These visitors are almost evenly split between first time visitors (53.3%) and repeat visitors (46.1%).

The average expense of the whole trip stands at €972.10 per person, a similar value to that of 2024. This amount is distributed as follows: €313.69 on round trip transport, €314.22 in accommodation (€76.62 per person per day) and €344.19 in other expenses during the stay (€84.75 per person per night), with almost half of this last category spent on food and drink.

During their stay, the popular activities in the destination have been making cultural visits (65.8%), shopping (57.9%), and going to the beach (56.7%). Additionally, 19.1% have made excursions without staying overnight from the municipality where they are staying in Destination Barcelona, with Barcelona city being the main destination of these excursion (9.6%). Gastronomy plays a key role in the tourist experience, as 57.6% of visitors have come to eat in a Spanish cuisine restaurant, 50.9% in a bars or cafés, and 41.4% in a supermarkets or markets.

The overall rating of the destination stands at 8.7 out of 10, with particular highlights being the character and friendliness of the people (8.6), public transport (8.5), and gastronomy (8.4). 86.2% of tourists felt welcomed by the local population, however, 42.6% believe there are too many people for sightseeing, and 32.7% think prices are too high in relation to quality.

The Profile and Habits of Tourists in Destination Barcelona 2025 has been undertaken thanks to 10.200 surveys to visitors aged 18 and over that stayed overnight in Destination Barcelona in the months of January to December 2025 in any type of accommodation other than a second home or a cruise, with the aim of getting to know better the profile and habits of travelers during their stay in Destination Barcelona.
