Pope Leo XIV’s visit boosts online interest in Barcelona

The OTB presents the monthly update on the Destination Barcelona tourism activity forecast report

The Barcelona Tourism Observatory: city and region publishes a new report on the Destination Barcelona tourism activity forecast for July.

Below are the main conclusions of this new edition of the report:

  • Air capacity in Barcelona for June is estimated to be 6,7 million seats (+7,7% year-on-year).
  • It is expected that during the month, 86 cruise ships will arrive to the Port of Barcelona, above the same month in 2025.
  • The cultural and leisure agenda will be marked by festivals and musical events, such as Clotilde Fest in Barcelona (18/06-09/07), Pride Barcelona (26/06-19/07), Nits Occident in Barcelona (27/06-21/07), Canet Rock (04/07), Bachcelona Festival (07/07-15/07), Cruïlla Festival in Barcelona (08/07-11/07), the European Balloon Festival in Igualada (08/07-12/07), Classical at the Beach in Barcelona (09/07-10/07), Summer nights at Poble Espanyol (30/07-31/08), the Santvi Fest in Sant Vicens de Montalt (31/07-03/08) and the Jardins de Terramar Festival in Sitges (31/07-12/08). The cultural scene will also stand out, with the Festival Grec in Barcelona (29/06-31/07), the Big Screen in Barcelona (30/06-04/07), Nights in Palau Güell (03/07-31/07) and Sala Montjuïc (10/07-05/08). As a big standout, Barcelona will also hold the Grand Départ of the Tour de France (04/07-05/07).
  • In terms of the conference and fair calendar, there are 12 confirmed congresses and almost 12.000 delegates in July. The largest event will be the FENS Forum 2026 (06/07-10/07), with around 7.000 expected attendees.
  • During July, almost all of the analyzed markets will enjoy summer school holidays. The only exceptions are Argentina and Singapore.
  • In the past month, Google searches for Barcelona have been higher to those in the same period of 2025. The most popular searches in Barcelona city have been the Sagrada Familia and the beach. Among the rising searches, Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Barcelona stands out as the main theme.
  • Hotel bookings in the past month have been led by the domestic market especially in Barcelona region, where they represent over half of the reservations. The United States has led the international market for Barcelona city, while France has done so for Barcelona region. 6 out of 10 bookings have been couples’ trips.
  • Currently, the level of reservations for the upcoming months are higher than the previous year in both Barcelona city and Barcelona region.
  • Compared to other European destinations, Barcelona city will have a similar level of hotel bookings as Amsterdam, and similar to the average from the cities mentioned in the report. Barcelona region is below the aforementioned.
