Barcelona destination bursts into celebration this August with numerous local festivals

The OTB presents the monthly update on the Destination Barcelona tourism activity forecast report

The Barcelona Tourism Observatory: city and region publishes a new report on the Destination Barcelona tourism activity forecast for August.

Below are the main conclusions of this new edition of the report:

  • Air capacity in Barcelona for June is estimated to be 6,2 million seats (+5,2% year-on-year). By mid-August, the airport will be linked through Boliviana de Aviación with a new destination in Bolivia: Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Furthermore, Shanghai will be connected through a new route operated by China Eastern, and Air China will increase the frequency of their flights to this destination.
  • It is expected that during the month, 86 cruise ships will arrive to the Port of Barcelona, slightly above the same month in 2024.
  • The cultural and leisure agenda will be headlined by the large number of town festivals throughout the destination, such as Festa Major de Gràcia in Barcelona (15/08-21/08), Festa Major de Sant Bartolomeu in Sitges (24/08), and Festa Major i Diada de Sant Fèlix in Vilafranca del Penedès (19/08-02/09). The destination will also stand out because of the festivals such as Festival Jardins de Terramar de Sitges (25/07-09/08), the Santvi Fest in Sant Vicenç de Montalt (31/07-03/08) and the Festival Circuit in Barcelona (09/08-17/08).
  • Despite the low professional activity in Summer, during August the most relevant event will be the AMEE International Association for Health Professions Education (4.000 attendees).
  • During August, almost all of the source markets included in the report will enjoy summer school holidays: Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea.
  • In the past month, the most common Google searches for Barcelona have been slightly below the ones in the same period for 2024. The most popular searches in Barcelona city are still Sagrada Familia. Among the rising searches, summer-related topics such as beaches, coves and water parks can be found.
  • In the last month, Barcelona Destination has ranked 5th in accommodation and 8th in flights in the global online ranking, ahead of cities like Madrid, Lisbon and Dublin. Currently, Barcelona’s position closely resembles that of Tokyo for accommodation and Rome for flights.
  • Hotel bookings in the past month have been led by the domestic market especially in Barcelona region, where they represent over half of the total reservations. In Barcelona city the United States continues to lead the international market, whilst for Barcelona region it has been France. 6 out of 10 bookings have been couples’ trips.
  • Currently, the level of reservations for the upcoming months are above those recorded last year for Barcelona destination, especially in August and September.
  • Compared to other European destinations, Barcelona city will have a similar level of hotel bookings as Amsterdam. It will also be higher than Vienna, but lower than Berlin, Madrid and London. Barcelona region is significantly below the aforementioned.
