The Observatory of Tourism in Barcelona: city and region has published its report on the results of the Survey on the profile and habits of tourists visiting Barcelona city during 2025
The typical tourist profile who has visited Barcelona city in 2025 is that of a man (62.4%), with an average age of 36.0 years, of international origin (86.9%), with university studies (72.2%) and working as a salaried employee (61.6%).
The hotel continues to be, once again, the type of accommodation most used by 55.5% of tourists in Barcelona city, followed by Homes for Tourist Use (HTUs) (16.8%), private homes (with friends, relatives) (13.9%) and youth hostels (11.4%). The average stay in Barcelona city in 2025 is 4.5 nights.
The plane has been once again become the main means of arrival (80.3%), followed by train (11.4%). Travel planning is mainly by the information they find on websites (60.5%), with Booking and artificial intelligence standing out as the most used sources, as well as friends or family (27.5%) and social networks or blogs (24.5%), with Instagram and TikTok being the most popular. Transport is mostly hired through the company’s website (74.5%) while accommodation is mainly hired through OTAs (online travel agencies) (65.2%), with Booking and Airbnb being the most used.
Leisure is the main reason for travel (66.9%), followed by those who come for professional reasons (20.2%) and for personal or other reasons (12.9%). These visitors are almost evenly split between first time visitors (54.6%) and repeat visitors (45.0%).
The average expense of the whole trip stands at €1,153.28 per person, a decrease of -1.9% compared to 2024. This amount is distributed as follows: €368.19 on round trip transport, €362.49 in accommodation (€88.20 per person per day), and €422.60 in other expenses during the stay (€106.27 per person per night), with almost half of this last category spent on food and drink.
During their stay, the most visited places in Barcelona were the Sagrada Família (80.6%), Plaça Catalunya / Passeig de Gràcia (78.8%), Las Ramblas (77.2%), and the waterfront (75.1%). The popular activities have been making cultural visits (79.0%), going to the beach (63.9%), and shopping (63.8%).
In addition, 8.5% of tourists have made excursions outside the city, with Destination Barcelona being the main destination of these excursions (6.8%). Gastronomy plays a key role in the tourist experience, as 66.0% of visitors have come to eat in a Spanish cuisine restaurant, 56.5% in bars or coffee shops, 42.8% in supermarkets or markets, and 42.6% in Catalan cuisine restaurants.
The overall rating of the city stands at 8.8 out of 10, with particular highlights being the architecture (9.4), culture (9.0), entertainment (8.6), and public transport (8.6). 92.0% of tourists highlight the ease of mobility, 84.3% felt well welcomed by the local population, and 80.6% consider Barcelona suitable for hosting major events. On the other hand, 57.4% believe there are too many people for sightseeing, and 41.1% think prices are too high relative to quality.

The Profile and Habits of Tourists in Barcelona city 2025 has been undertaken thanks to 3.988 surveys to visitors aged 18 and over that stayed overnight in the city of Barcelona in the months of January to December 2025 in any type of accommodation other than a second home or a cruise, with the aim of getting to know better the profile and habits of travelers during their stay in the city.
